The Darling River is a tributary of the Murray River. It has its source near the north western NSW town of Brewarinna (not counting the rivers to the north which feed its headwaters). It is the third-longest river in Australia, with a length of 1545km. (See the related links.)

The Darling River was discovered by explorer Charles Sturt in February 1829, and named after the New South Wales Governor, Ralph Darling.

The Darling River flows into the Murray at Wentworth, and together they make up the Murray-Darling river system, and the Murray-Darling basin, which encompasses a huge area of southern Australia.
