Since the untitled younger sons of titled people were commoners, there were members of the nobility who were also commoners.

The nobles were people who swore allegiance and loyalty to the monarch and promised to support the monarch with the military powers available to them. In exchange for this they got land to use and govern, and military protection. The promise of military support originally implied, in most cases, that the nobles would be knights, but it was not always true that they were, especially as time went on.

The first members of family to be made nobles were elevated by kings who were their friends or for whom they had provided great services. Since the nobility was usually hereditary, most members of the nobility were born to it.

The serfs swore loyalty to the nobles and gave them part of their crops, or rent instead, according to custom, and got a place to live and farm and protection in return.

In many countries, the families of the nobility still exist, and have limited authority. In others, they exist, but only as people who own titles of no special consequence. And in yet others, noble titles have been banned.
