There are actually two ways of classifying volcanoes.

The first one is by activity.

If it has erupted recently and most likely will, then it's active.

If it hasn't erupted recently but still has a magma chamber, it's considered dormant.

If it will never erupt again and has no source of magma, then it's extinct.

The second one is by the shape. Usually they are put into three main categories.

The shortest, but wide volcano is called the shield volcano. These volcanoes are made from heavy and unpressurized lava. Some can be found in Hawaii.

A less wide, but much taller volcano is called the cinder cone volcano. This volcano is made from lava building up upon the volcano.

The tallest of the volcanoes are called composite volcanoes or stratovolcanoes. They are much bigger than the others and they are considered the most dangerous not just because of the lava, but especially because of the ash they eject.
