Lake Baikal in Russia is the largest and deepest freshwater body of water in all of Asia. It water is said to be so clear that people riding in a boat on the lake can see all the way to the bottom. It is so uncontaminated you can drink from the lake.

Situated in a beautiful area of Siberia, it's the world's deepest lake - more than 5000 feet - so the bottom is not visible except in the shallower parts, because even clear water absorbs and scatters light quite readily. Even so, its own tourist web-site claims visibility of 40 metres (about 130 feet) "on a good day". It supports a wide range of life including a species of fresh-water seal.
