Political regions include things such as continents (though this may be a geographical term as well), countries, states, cities, counties, districts, departments, etc. It's basically an area with it's own politics. Take Europe for example. Europe actually can be labeled as having its own politics, as it has the Council of Europe. You can then break this into about 47 or so countries, and we will use the United Kingdom as an example. You can then break the United Kingdom into its constituent countries, crown dependancies, and territories; we will use Northern Ireland as an example. You can then break down Northern Ireland into 6 counties, and we will then use County Antrim as an example. You can break County Antrim into its several cities, for example Belfast. See, wherever we did a breaking, it was a different political region. Here's a visual example: Europe > United Kingdom > Northern Ireland > County Antrim > Belfast. So Belfast is a political region inside the political region of County Antrim, which is a political region inside the political region of Northern Ireland, and so on and so forth.
