The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The outer planets (they are separated by the asteroid belt) are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The outer planets are different than the inner planets because the outer planets are not solid. They are all made up of gas. However, the inner planets are rocky and hard.
Earth and the outer planets are all considered part of the solar system. They all orbit the sun. Additionally, they are all made up of various elements and materials found in the universe.

The planets of the solar system are often grouped into two main categories: the inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) and the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). Another common grouping is the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) and the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune).
All outer planets are gas giants, composed mostly of hydrogen and helium. They have no solid surfaces and are much larger than the inner planets. They are located beyond the asteroid belt in our solar system.

Uranus and Neptune are two outer planets that are similar in size. Both planets are known as ice giants and are similar in diameter and mass.

The planets in the solar system can be sorted to two types: inner planets that are the four closer planets to the Sun, which are rocky and small. And outer planets which are the four other planets which are gaseous and very large.
The four inner, rocky planets are also known as the terrestrial planets. These are; Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The four outer gas giant planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The inner planets are smaller and have a higher average density. The outer planets are much larger, but have no real surface - just atmosphere that gets thicker as you travel inwards. The outer planets all have a ring system (the inner planets dont) while the outer planets have captured a lot more natural satellites or moons than the inner planets.
