It's also known for its university-level educational training and research into the medical sciences, most particulary gastrointestinal and liver diseases. And it's known for its ancient history, as a stopping point between the cities of Tehran and Mashad, and as one of the capitals of the Parthian Empire. It was particularly in regard to the latter that the area became famous, and infamous. The Empire was widely known, and feared, for its Parthian volleys. For the Parthian volley was the military strategy of suddenly stopping the fight and running from the enemy, only to unleash attacks when they were least expected.
