An event must meet certain criteria to be classified as a disaster, including causing significant loss of life, property, and infrastructure, overwhelming local resources and capabilities, and requiring external assistance for response and recovery. Disasters are usually declared by government authorities based on these criteria.
A damaging event is often referred to as a disaster or a catastrophe.
catastrophe
An event is considered a disaster when it causes significant damage or disruption to a community, resulting in the need for external assistance for recovery. This could include loss of life, widespread property damage, and severe economic impact. The scale and severity of the event often dictates whether it is classified as a disaster.
An event becomes a disaster when it overwhelms the affected community's ability to cope, leading to significant human, economic, or environmental losses. This transformation typically occurs when a hazard, such as a natural disaster (e.g., earthquake, flood), intersects with vulnerable populations or infrastructure, causing widespread disruption. The timing of this change can vary, depending on factors like preparedness, response capacity, and the severity of the event. Ultimately, it is the combination of the hazard's impact and the society's resilience that determines whether an event escalates into a disaster.
There is no disaster name per se. Being from northern Canada I will say that our snowstorms are called Blizzards or Whiteouts. I guess an avalanche is also a snow disaster, so long as its predominantly full of snow/ice.
