By international conventions, the new day begins at the International Date Line, which is very generally (and with many significant deviations) at 180 degrees longitude. On the east side of the line, it is the following day, while on the west side of the line it is the preceding day.

One of the biggest deviations of the International Date Line includes the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. A number of islands that are in East longitude are, for administrative purposes, in the "day before". For example, the U.S. Air Force base at Shemya, Alaska (their motto: "It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from here!") is at 174 degrees East, and the island of Attu, at the end of the Aleutian chain, is at 172 degrees East.

Therefore, the island of Attu, Alaska is the "last" place on Earth to see a particular day. The nearby Russian islands are on the other side of the International Date Line, and are already in the next day.
