Estevanico, a black Muslim slave of Andres Dorantes de Carranza, was one of the early explorers of the southwestern United States. He was one of four survivors, after the original group was abandoned in Mexico. When they reached Mexico City, he was sold to the Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, who sent him on an expedition to find the fabled city of Cibola. He was killed by Zuni Indians.
