What does alcohol look like and how is it used?

There are two ways to make alcohols: by natural means or by artificial means. 'Natural means' includes brewing, fermenting and any other way commonly used to make an alcoholic drink. 'Artificial means' is the industrial process of hydrating ethene and is done on an enormous scale for use as a solvent or a reactant in many other processes, or sold in its own right (for example, methylated spirits and rubbing alcohol).

Ethyl alcohol - the alcohol that is found in alcoholic drinks such as beer, wine and spirits - is easily made by dissolving sugar in water, adding a bit of yeast, and waitng a few days. This needs to be done in anaerobic conditions, otherwise you will end up with acetic acid (vinegar).

To do this, you will need a container with an airlock device that allows gasses to leave, but not to enter the container. You cannot seal the container because it can explode from the buildup of carbon dioxide gas produced in the reaction.

To cheat a little, you can produce a good bit of alcohol by dissolving a half cup of sugar in a two litre plastic soft drink bottle. Add a 1\4 tsp of yeast (baker's or brewer's, doesn't matter), and set the cap loosly on top but do not screw it on. Because of the constant production of CO2 bubbling out, the air will not be able to enter, so this will create an anaerobic condition.

After several days, the sugar will be consumed and the yeast sediment will begin to settle to the bottom - if you wait long enough, the solution will clear completely. You now have, on top, a solution of ethyl alcohol in water which can be distilled to nearly pure ethyl alcohol for chemical purposes.

Please note that "ethyl alcohol" is the only alcohol that is not toxic to humans, and even ethyl alcohol is toxic under certain conditions of overconsumption. All other alcohols are toxic to humans.
