The Taupo volcano has produced two cataclysmic eruptions. The first, a VEI 8 super eruption ocurred 26,500 years ago. The second, a VEI 7 ocurred around 180 AD. The volcano has produced at least 26 smaller eruptions as well.
There have been a couple of VEI 8 (Volcanic Explosive Index) volcanic events in NZ in history.Taupo, about 26 500 years ago erupted about 1000 cubic km of ash and debris.Whakamaru, in the same Taupo Volcanic field, erupted about 345 000 years ago and produced between 1200 and 2000 cubic km of material. In more recent times, cAD176, there was a large eruption from Taupo, and the resulting red skies are recorded in Roman and Chinese writings. About 30km3 was erupted, mainly ash.
No. Nobody had discovered NZ when it errupted, but the skies in China went pink for a month after it happened it was so big
Lake Taupo is one of my favourite places in NZ. It has formed inside a caldera. The caldera, was created by a super volcanic eruption about 26,500 years ago. The Lake itself has a surface area of surface area of 616 square kilometres it is is the largest freshwater lake by surface area in Oceania. It is up to 190 metres deep so it must have been formed from a large eruption indeed. The Lake is fed from the south side by Waitahanui River, the Tongariro River which run off the higher ground around the active volcanos Mts Ruapeheu and Tongariro. The Lake has great fishing and it's possible to go skiing on the mountain, visit the surrounding hot pools and then catch a rainbow trout on the Lake many of our customers have done this and say it is a unique experience. The Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe, led by Chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV, played a significant role in assisting with the aftermath of the Lake Taupo landslide in 1846. They provided shelter, food, and support to survivors and showed great compassion and resilience during this tragic event.
