If it is a server, then it ought to have a backup UPS, or Uninterruptable Power Supply. This will keep the server running for at least a few minutes. (Most power outages are 3 minutes or less.) When the UPS battery begins to discharge, it can send a signal to the server to perform a controlled shutdown so that nothing will fail by being shut down suddenly.

The bigger the UPS, the bigger the price tag, of course, but a 15-minute UPS is probably under $100 or so. The battery will probably need to be replaced every other year.

Without a UPS, when the power fails, the server crashes. On older hard drives, a sudden power failure had at least the possibility of destroying the hard drive, which is why UPS systems are such a good idea!
