The access of roots to necessary nutrients for life sustaining activities is what happens when a plant is fertilized. The appropriate amount of fertilizer is applied. It becomes available to plant roots because of the watering that must follow its application. A lack of irrigation leaves the nutrients unavailable and inaccessible to the plants. Nutrients must be in soluble form in order to be taken up by plant roots.

Once inside the plant, the dissolved nutrients are transported to the parts of the plant body where photosynthesis takes place. In many plants, that means the leaves. But in cactus plants, it's the stem. Photosynthesis changes the dissolved nutrients into energizing starches and sugars to carry out and support life sustaining activities.
