In terms of raw materials such as crops, food stuffs, wood and metal, the only thing of significance Japan BARELY exports is Green Tea. You've tried Japanese Green Tea right? ..................... Its pretty bland; I prefer Chinese. Moving on; the primary resouce Japan has, because virtually all its Natural Resources have been used up, the country in fact has no iron ore deposits left (its all gone), the only thing Japan can export, is technology. Japanese education heavily emphasizes math and science, because technological know-how is the only thing that will keep it competitive in the world market. Also, much Japanese technology is top secret, as with all corporate cultures, there is a lot of closely guarded stuff. The primary exports, are electronic components; the parts in your computer, your I-pod, even your Xbox 360, basically if its electronic, chances are at least ONE component is Japanese. That is the reason its the second largest economy in the world; basically the entire planet relies on Japanese electronics. Even during the time of Soviet era Russia, although the Russians developed their own technology, in fact a generation ahead of Japanese, and two generations ahead of U.S., even though Japan was officially a NATO country, that did not stop the country from selling to Russia, so even the new technology the soviets developed was reliant on Japanese electronic components. Indeed, you know that although primitive, the Iraqi army used technology also right? A U.S. helicopter pilot, for example, may have been shot down with a stinger missile, whose electronic guidance systems were Japanese. The apache helicopter the pilot was flying, most of its electronics were, chances are, Japanese, so, you have one Japanese product, blowing up another. This doesn't sound very ethical does it? So long as Japan gets money, who cares who kills who..... Naturally to a prejudiced Chinese this would not sound too shocking. Speaking of China, Japan gets most of its steel from that country; the entire steel industry in Japan is dependent on China, Japanese contruction, and industry, can not survive without China. As of late Japan has had to be very careful; although adamant regarding WWII war crimes, at the same time, most Japanese foreign ministers are very careful not to ruffle any feathers in Beijing, the reason that is, is because if the Chinese get ticked off, its steel producers will sell Japan low quality steel. Because of numerous incidents involving low quality steel, Japan has an entire labor force dedicated to inspecting the steel it gets from China. Its a mess; China needs the money (there is still a lot of poverty), Chinese steel workers need their jobs, Japan needs the steel, but they all hate each other.
