A dome mountain is magma cooled and hardened beneath the earth's surface to become later exposed. They are either circular or oval with the older structure becoming progressively older as it is found closer to the center of the fold. They are generally too large to be observed from the earth's surface and are readily apparent only on topographical maps.
In domed mountains it is volcanism that forms them. They are formed when the magma pushes up and is injected between layers of sedimentary rock, but does not erupt.
