High pressure gas cylinders are generally built with domed ends to allow for expansion of the gas inside the cylinder. The domed ends provide greater strength and stability to withstand the high internal pressures. Additionally, the curved shape reduces stress concentrations at the ends of the cylinder.
Gasses are also stored in spheres. Likewise, gas cylinders usually have domed ends. High Pressure gas storage containers have the same problem a soap bubble has, to maximize volume with minimum surface area. In this case the surface is usually heavy high-strength metal. You could store high pressure gas in any shape, but it would be heavier than a sphere or a cylinder for the same storage volume. So why is a cylinder just like a sphere? If you had a spherical high-pressure gas container, it would have equal internal pressure all over its surface. So imagine we cut a ribbon band of material circumferentially and made a hundred of them--then we stacked and welded the bands into a cylinder. The pressure on the band (now a longer tube) would be the same as the pressure was on the sphere--BUT we have a much larger volume.
A domed roof is also known as a dome or a cupola. It is a rounded roof structure that resembles an upside-down bowl.
A dome mountain is magma cooled and hardened beneath the earth's surface to become later exposed. They are either circular or oval with the older structure becoming progressively older as it is found closer to the center of the fold. They are generally too large to be observed from the earth's surface and are readily apparent only on topographical maps.In domed mountains it is volcanism that forms them. They are formed when the magma pushes up and is injected between layers of sedimentary rock, but does not erupt.
The shape of the chief cells of cuboidal epithilium is domed-shaped.
A shield volcano is a type of volcano that covers a wide area and generally results from a quiet lava eruption. This type of volcano has a broad, domed shape with gentle slopes due to the flowing lava spreading out widely over time. Examples include Mauna Loa in Hawaii and the Galapagos Islands.
A domed hall is a rotunda.
The pressure inside a tank pushes equally on all sides of the tank. Thus a tank must be designed to provide resistance to the force of a solid, liquid, or gas pushing against it. For high-pressure gases, the strongest tank shape is a sphere. Because the gas pushes on all points, the spherical shape is maintained, with no point receiving any more force than any other point on the round ball. Because round ball tanks are impractical to build, ship, and mount, the shape is often further refined into a cylinder with domed ends. The round part of the cylinder still resists pressure, but it is easier to build, haul, and set in place than a round ball. The ends of the cylinder are domed to continue the arched design, so that they have maximum resistance to pressure.
