One example might be a lady in a small village in say India who sets up a dress making business with just a sewing machine and small amount of stock. When the orders flow in, she may need to employ others to help make the dresses as employees or more likely as self employed contractors. If the business grows to the size where it needs a manufacturing unit/factory, it would have moved from as micro scale business/industry to a small to medium sized business enterprise.

There are some excellent micro lending initiatives out there now to encourage and support such small ventures as they seek to get started. The value to local communities can be great in terms of providing work and an income in deprived areas.
