This includes things like red blood cells and white blood cells (crazy important when looking at how someone's immune system is working) that don't really fall into 'histology' because they're not a tissue.
Very common in pathology - benefits include that you can quickly stain and analyse blood cells, whereas histology requires gruelling hours of embedding samples in wax (an overnight process!), cutting these sections at 2-5 microns (veeeery thin, and fiddly to do right!), then staining, cover-slipping a slide, and THEN you can look at what's there.
