Fats have several functions in the body:

They are primarily a store of energy. The body stores excess starches as fat, which contains twice the amount of energy as the same mass of carbohydrates or protein.

Fat oxidation provides the body tissues with warmth. Fat layers provide insulation in the skin and cushioning of the major internal organs (especially in the abdomen where there are no protective bones).
