Recently, the interest in recycled-content fleece has gained popularity (Patagonia, LL Bean, REI and Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) are some of the largest customers purchasing recycled fabrics from Polartec), while one company has been supporting and using the recycled-content fleece from its inception...and producing locally in the USA (Knütes or Knuetes). Polartec fabrics are now fully recyclable. A.Richardson

Polartec fabric was first introduced in 1979 by Malden Mills, which later became known for its innovative use in outdoor and performance clothing. The Polartec jacket, utilizing this fabric, gained popularity in the 1980s as outdoor enthusiasts embraced its warmth and breathability. The specific "Polartec jacket" as a branded product may refer to various styles released over the years, but the foundational fabric debuted in 1979.

Polartec is a registered trademark for a special fabric treatment. Here is a direct quote from their website: " Polartec® fabric technologies are performance features that can be designed into or applied to existing fabrics. By using unique silver yarns in Polartec® Power Dry® fabrics, we can add permanent odor resistance. With yarn selection and different construction techniques, we can create more wind resistant or sun protective fabrics. And with an advanced surface fusion polymer, we can make fabrics more durable and highly water repellant. Many of these technologies can be added to a number of different fabric styles to meet the exact performance needs of clothing manufacturers and consumers. Polartec® technologies help us push the limit of what fabrics and finished garments can accomplish."
