depends on the fuel. when a fuel burns, its components react with oxygen, so you get lots of oxides. for example, when you burn a mole of natural gas, (CH4) the carbon forms two double bonds with oxygen to make 1 mole CO2, while the four hydrogens react with two oxygens to make 2 moles H2O.
