Mexico is a rather hilly country:

  • North Western Mexico, where cities such as Mexicali or Hermosillo are located, has a mean elevation of 2,250 meters (7,377 ft).
  • North Eastern Mexico has a mean elevation of 2,200 meters (7,213 ft). Some cities located there are Monterrey, Chihuahua or Saltillo.
  • The Mexican Central Plateau can be divided int two regions, where the northern portion - and cities such as Zacatecas and Durango are located - has 1,100 meters (3,606 ft) of altitude, while the southern portion has an average of 2,000 meters (6,557 ft) of altitude. On the southern portion cities such as Mexico City, Toluca and Puebla can be found.
  • Southern Mexico, with cities such as Oaxaca and Chilpancingo, has an elevation of some 2,000 meters (6,557 ft).
  • Finally South Eastern Mexico, where the Yucatan peninsula is located and cities such as Merida, Cancun or Chetumal are found, is almost flat with a mean elevation of just 10 meters (33 ft).
