lava dome has a more vicious lava than of a shield volcano.lava dome is formed by relatively, small bulbous gases,however for the shield volcano it is made up of BASIC lava.the basic lava spreads over a wide area before it solidifies for lava dome it is too vicious to flow any great distance. shield volcano produces a gently sloping cone.an example of a shield volcano is the mauna loa in Hawaii where as an example of a lava dome is the mount st.helens lava dome .hope this helps.
