Renal pelvis dilation (RPD) is a slight increase in the amount of urine in the renal pelvis of one or both kidneys, and is found in a small percentage of fetuses during ultrasounds. It occurs in 2-3% of pregnancies.

Hydronephrosis refers to the distension of the renal pelvises caused by the obstruction of the outflow of urine. Bilateral (both kidneys) hydronephrosis is usually caused by prostate enlargement in men, while unilateral (one kidney) hydronephrosis may be caused by kidney stones, tumors compressing the ureters, surgical strictures etc.
This usually occurs when an obstruction in the ureter, tube leading from kidney pelvis to bladder, occurs, such as in case of a kidney stone lodged in the ureter. It can also happen if the bladder cannot empty properly, such as when the prostate is very enlarged or there is urinary retention for any reason, like nerve injury to bladder, trauma to urethra, the tube leading out of bladder. The distention usually corrects itself once the obstruction is relieved. Distention of kidney pelvis can lead to infection of kidney and pain in flank.
