Staffordshire bull terriers, as the name suggests, are from the terrier group of dogs. They originate from Great Britain from a mixture of bull dogs and bull terriers. They are very intelligent and sociable dogs, with an especial fondness for people and children in particular.
"Pit Bull" came from dogs that had Bulldog bloodline, that were fought in Pits. Before Dog Fighting, they were used for Bull & Bear Baiting & Ratting. The Bull & Terrier Breeds divided into American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier & Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Before being called APBT- they were called the pit dog, the 1/2 & 1/2, Yankee dog, and more. The Bull & Terrier Breeds came about by mixing the White Terrier w/ Bulldogs, they chose the Terrier for it's High Prey Drive/ Agility & Determination & the Bulldog for the Strength & Endurance to create what we know as the " Pit Bull" Breeds. When Imported to the USA, people in the East Coast still used the dogs for fighting, while Farmers moved West & used them as Farm/ Livestock dogs.
The origin of Staffies goes back to before the 19th century when bloodsports like bull baiting, bear baiting and cock fighting were common. Dog fights with bears, bulls and other animals were organised as entertainment and early bull and terriers were bred for these games. These were early proto-staffords for Staffordshire bull terriers, as well as for the bull terrier and pit bull terriers. The exact date when Staffordshire bull terriers came into existence is not known, but it would be around the mid-1800s to end of the 1800s.
The name American stafforshire terrier is not the same breed as the American Pitbull Terrier or the Stafordshire bull terrier (although they are very close cousins.) The Pitbull was bred for performance rather than looks so there are a wide variety of body types and temperments. The American Staffordshire was bred for the show ring which is why the body type is often similar in this breed.
