The reason Earl is curving off to the northeast rather than slamming into the East Coast is due to an upper level trough and associated cold front that are moving east out of the Great Lakes, with the steering winds behind it pushing Earl along to the east. Behind this cold front is an air mass change, which is quite the relief for the East Coast which has seen a very extended period of late-summer heat. Combine this cooler and dryer air mass with a building anticyclone, and contrasted with the stagnant air that has been with us for so long, the next few days should be absolutely beautiful. Depending on where you are, the temperatures will be considerably cooler with much less humid air, and the sky will be clear and very blue for the first part of the Labor Day weekend (with some breezy conditions following frontal passage Saturday).
