The babul tree is Acacia nilotica and it has a lot of medicinal uses as well as being a source of red gum which is similar to Gum Arabic which comes from another Acacia tree, Acacia Senegal.

It is used in the Indian subcontinent to treat a number of diseases in traditional medicine systems, some of which are STDs, coughs and colds. In Lebanon it is used during recovery from typhoid fever.

It can be used as a living hedge to deter animals from getting in to a field as it has thorns, and is used to make agricultural implements, carts and a variety of other things. The Egyptians used it to carve statues and for furniture making.

it is also a close relative of the kikar tree (Acacia nilotica subspecies indica).
