There is a domain of microorganisms known as "Archaea" which have been found at very great depth (up to 4 miles deep in the Earth's crust) and that metabolise the minerals in rocks. Because they are able to survive in very extreme conditions (such as the high temperatures and pressures within the Earth's crust), they are known collectively as "extremophiles".
