Pilot Knob Volcano is located in Austin, Texas near McKinney Falls State Park. Pilot Knob consists of four small hills in a two-mile area that we call Pilot Knob. When Pilot Knob formed in Austin it was completely underwater so when it erupted the magma came in contact with the seawater. It is one of the few volcanoes that are on private property. Luckily for the owners Pilot Knob is currently extinct, but around 83 million years ago it erupted. This volcano is made up of sedimentary rocks that created shell fragments around the volcano after the eruption. These fragments have created about seven smaller hills in the ash, and some lithified beach sediments. Now Pilot Knob is an attraction for people to look at when driving around the Austin area.
In South and Central Texas, there are many remnants of marine volcanos that were present in the shallow seas about 80 million years ago. An example is Pilot Knob in Travis County and there are many others near Uvalde,” McCall said. Pilot Knob is the closest volcano to San Antonio, just a few miles outside McKinney Falls State Park near Austin.
The last known eruption of Pilot Knob in Missouri occurred about 1.48 billion years ago during the Proterozoic Era. The volcanic activity at Pilot Knob resulted in the formation of iron-rich volcanic rocks that are now known as the Iron Mountain Formation.
It is a cone volcano.
