What unit of measure is used for rate of energy?

You measure your heart rate or your "pulse" by putting your first two fingers on either wrist or on the side of your neck, and count the number of times your heart beats in one minute. You cannot use your thumb, because both thumbs have a strong pulse that will interfere with your counting.

There is no set unit for rate. "Rate" can be seen as the speed with which something varies in relation to something else. Therefore, a rate could be measured by dividing the magnitude of a change by the elapsed time.

For example, "velocity" is the speed with which the displacement of an object changes, so if something moves 10 meters away from you in a straight line and takes 5 seconds to do so, it's rate of change of displacement is 10 m/5 s = 2 m/s. In this case the unit would be meters per second (m/s), the unit of velocity.

Keep in mind that there are other ways to express rates. An interest rate for a savings account could be 1 % per month. This means that the total amount of money in the account increases by 1% each month, so if you start with $ 100, after 1 month you have $ 101, and after 2 months you have $ 102.01, and after 3 months you have $ 103.0301, and so on. In this case, since the amount of money gained each month changes, it'd make little sense to have a concrete unit for the rate, so it's just expressed as 1 %/month.

Energy is measured in joules (J); the rate of energy conversion or energy transfer is measured in joules/second, which has the special name watt (W). Of course, the standard SI prefixes can be used for larger or smaller amounts - for example, µW, mW, kW, MW, GW.
