There are several contenders for the most violent eruption of Kilauea, however they were all before recorded records on the island and have only been able to be extrapolated from the evidence left on the volcano. The one that is most understood of the explosive eruptions was the 1924. This explosive eruption from the summit caldera was most likely caused by a shallow interaction of super heated magma and ground water, as the caldera in that time was much deeper and the water table was a litle higher. This combination of a high water table and a deep caldera make Kiluaea prone to steam driven explosions from the summit. The Smithsonian Institute of Global Vlcanism has this eruption rated as a V.E.I. - 2. The eruptive column from the summit reached the altitude of the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption.

Another contender for the largest explosive eruption took place in or around 1790. This eruption was like the 1924 eruption driven by water and magma interaction, but seemd to be significantly more powerful. However without further evidence the true power and nature of the eruption will not be understood. Smithsonian Institute of Global Volcanism has the eruption rated at a V.E.I. - 4.
