The spacecraft that landed on Mars in the 1970s was the Viking 1 Lander. It was the first spacecraft to have landed on Mars on July 20, 1976.
The first rovers sent to Mars were the Russian Rovers,Mars 2 and Mars 3. But, Mars 2 crash-landed on the planet and Mars 3 ceased transmissions 20 seconds after landing. Mariner 4 was the first succesfully landed probe.
Viking 1 was launched on August 20, 1975, and the second craft, Viking 2, was launched on September 9, 1975. Viking 1 entered Mars orbit on June 19, 1976. The Viking 1 touched down on the surface of Mars on July 20, 1976, and was joined by the Viking 2 on September 3.

The rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars on January 4th and 25th 2004, respectively, they are still operational.The Phoenix lander landed on May 25th 2008 and lost contact on November 10th 2008.
