What would you do if a earthquake occurred when you were at school?

When the shaking begins, hide under your desk and cover your neck and head with your arms. If your entire body does not fit, keep your torso underneath as much as possible. Once the shaking stops, move outside to an open area where there are not many things that could fall. Try to stay with the group, hopefully your school has some sort of plan of where to meet in case of emergency that requires evacuation.

If the bus was moving, it would not likely to be felt unless it was a very big one like the Gisborne one we had on Dec 21 2007, which was 6.8 on the Richter scale. In that case, the bus would appear to shake, and even then you may well think it was a mechanical fault. The bus driver hopefully would stop. Then the shaking would continue and everyone would recognize it as an earthquake.

The best thing to do then is to duck down away from the windows if possible. The biggest danger is the glass breaking in the large windows. Cover your head with your hands. It is better for your hands to get cut than your head.

The other danger is roads slumping and bridges falling down. The best thing is to avoid bridges in an earth quake. A worst case scenario is the bus having a major crash as a result of the earthquake.

There are all sorts of possibilites that can happen if an earthquake happens while you are in a bus. But you are less likely to feel it if the bus is moving.
