On February 20, 1962, NASA astronaut John Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission becoming the third American in space and the first American to orbit the Earth circling the earth three times. His flight lifted off at Cape Canaveral, Florida and lasted a total of 4 hours, 55 minutes before the Friendship 7 spacecraft splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean.
A spacecraft or rocket is used to lift off from a planet on a journey into space. The rocket engines provide the necessary thrust to overcome Earth's gravity and propel the spacecraft into space.
To lift off from a planet and journey into space, a spacecraft would typically rely on powerful rocket engines to generate enough thrust to overcome Earth's gravity. The spacecraft would need to achieve a certain speed, called escape velocity, to break free from the planet's gravitational pull and enter into space. Once in space, the spacecraft would continue its journey following its pre-determined trajectory towards its destination.
The Saturn V rocket weighed about 6.2 million pounds (2.8 million kg) at lift-off.
The first dog in space, Laika rode aboard Sputnik II in 1957. Laika survived lift off and proved that human space travel would be possible. Laika didn't even orbit around Earth once due to her loss of oxygen.
Stars are the only objects in space that give off their own light.Other objects are visible only if a star shines on them.
On his first orbital mission, John Glenn was launched from NASA's Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida.

On October 29, 1998, Glenn lifted off for his second spaceflight, this time aboard STS-95, which carried a crew of 7. Glenn did not fly the Shuttle, he was a passenger.

It was Scott Carpenter (given name Malcolm), who was the back-up pilot when Glenn blasted off to become the first American to orbit the Earth, February 20, 1962. Carpenter was still around 36 years later when the 77-year-old Glenn returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on October 29, 1998.
Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986.
