Although the eruptions can be classed into "four" main periods, it is more accurate to say it was "one" long eruption continuously occurring at a fluctuating rate, from 1963 to 1967. During this time, two smaller islands were also created but eroded below sea level. (see related link)
Surtsey
Surtsey was formed in 1963 during a volcanic eruption off the coast of Iceland. This makes Surtsey around 58 years old as of 2021.
It was an explosion from the island Surtur
i think God ate some mexican food then farted and surtsey was formed then scientists were like yolo lets call this surtsey!
The worlds youngest island is Surtsey, one of the islands in Iceland. After a volcanic eruption in 1963. after the eruption subsided in 1967, erosion had caused it to become smaller in size.

Surtsey is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, south of Iceland. It is a small volcanic island that was formed in a volcanic eruption in 1963.
the magma and lava in Surtsey are of alkali olivine basalt, which is the type of basalt found in Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands)
off the southern coast of Iceland, formed by volcanic eruption in 1963
Minerals found on Surtsey include olivine, pyroxene, magnetite, ilmenite, and plagioclase. These minerals are typical of volcanic islands like Surtsey, which was formed through volcanic activity.
The island of Surtsey did not exist until the 14th of November 1963*Surtsey is Icelandic and means "Surtur's Island"The source of the lava that formed Surtsey was the Mid-Atlantic-Ridge (MAR). The MAR is part of a system of Mid-Ocean-Ridges that together form the longest mountain chain on Earth. The islands mode of formation (eruption of lava into water) means that the rock (known as Scoria) is very easily weathered and eroded meaning that the island has decreased in size ever since the volcanic eruption stopped.*This was the day when the solidified lava from an undersea eruption just south of Iceland first broke the surface of the Atlantic. For more information, please see the related link.
Mount Surtsey is not extinct. In fact, it is not even dormant. A volcano is classified as "dormant" after 200 years of inactivity. Surstey erupted in 1963, and that was less than 200 years ago.
