The first satellite in the system, Navstar 1, was launched February 22, 1978.
The first GPS Navstar satellite was launched on February 22, 1978. This was the beginning of the GPS system, which has now grown to include a constellation of over 30 satellites providing global positioning and navigation services.
The concept of GPS (Global Positioning System) was developed in the early 1970s by the United States Department of Defense. The first GPS satellite was launched in 1978, and the full constellation of 24 operational satellites was completed in 1993.
Around 19591959? Not likely since GPS didn't exist then. The first GPS satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base on February 22, 1978. However, it wasn't until the mid-1980s that commercial GPS equipment appeared on the market.

The system was designed for military navigation but became available for civilian use in the 1980s, significantly changing navigation and location tracking worldwide.
The first series of GPS satellites was called Block 1 and was only used for feasibilty demonstration until the operational Block 2 satellites were launched. The third Block 2 GPS satellite was launched on 18th August 1989 and as you need atleast 3 visible satellites for a fix that is about when GPS started as a working system. Coverage was extremely sporadic at first as there was rarely three or more satellites in view until much more of the constelation was in orbit a few years later. In about 1991-2 I used an early GPS receiver, it was roughy an 18 inch cube including the CRT screen, weighed about 100lbs or so and needed a large (by modern standards) external antenna. Due to the low number of satellites in orbit it only gave a fix for a couple of hours, roughly twice a day.

Weather observations, communications, GPS, observations outside of the atmosphere.
Not all phones have GPS. And not all phones that have GPS have activated GPS upon first use. For many, you would have to enable the GPS first.
The first of the GPS satellites were launched in 1978. In 1993 there were enough of them in orbit above the earth so that the system was operational. Units were available well back to 1992, but they didn't become really reliable until 1996 when civilian units were allowed as much precision as military ones. Oldsmobile introduced the first vehicle GPS system on the market in 1995. GPS was later put into mobile handsets by Verizon, Sprint and Nextel in the late 1990’s.

GPS IIR satellite launched on final SLC-17A Delta II
Not sure which company actually built the first GPS hardware, but the GPS system was first developed for, and used by, the US Military (US Department of Defense) in 1973.
