Found worldwide except for New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar, and the extreme polar regions, almost all species of the "Picidae" family of near-passerine birds nest in tree cavities. While most species live in woodlands or forest habitats, some species do live in desert regions and nest in cactus or in holes burrowed into the earth.
