A: Astronomy is the study of the cosmos, the universe, the outside world. I believe that there are two types of people: those who chose to learn about their past, and those who chose to learn more about their present. Astronomy helps to learn about our present, past and future, so everybody can find some area of astronomy that interests them.
Scientists have two motives for gaining new knowledge. First, science is motivated by curiosity. Scientists are very interested in understanding the world better. Second, scientific knowledge has proved to have many practical applications, and our experience has been that new knowledge is going to come in handy in various ways that are often difficult to predict.
Nicholas Copernicus's book "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres" proposed a heliocentric model of the universe, shifting the understanding of Earth's place in the cosmos. Isaac Newton's book "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica" laid the foundation for classical mechanics and laws of motion, revolutionizing physics and advancing the field of astronomy. Both works transformed scientific thought and paved the way for new discoveries in astronomy and beyond.
The scientists who did the most to help us to understand motion are Isaac Newton (who devised the Laws of Motion) and Albert Einstein (who devised the theory of relativity).
The Maya made significant advancements in mathematics, developing a sophisticated numbering system and understanding of concepts like zero. They also made important contributions in astronomy, creating accurate calendars and observing celestial events with precision.

The most famous would be SN1572 or Tycho's supernova [See Link] It's appearance in the Milky Way was perhaps one of the two or three most important events in the history of astronomy. The "new star" helped to revise ancient models of the heavens and to inaugurate a tremendous revolution in astronomy.
