The water rates are so high in Armona, CA because in a survey that was done, the people administering the questions, included the million dollar ranchers causing the low income community to pay $150.00 - $350.00 a month for their water.
We have asked the CA Health Department to survey again the community, but excluding the ranchers please. The CA health dept. agreed however nothing has been done since then.
Meanwhile the Armona water board shuts off water and leaving families without water. The water board also charges people for water with broken or malfunctioning water meters, and does not charge all families the same. A family of two pays the same or more for water as a family of five or six. For some families the water bill is higher than their rent!
I have searched for laws that govern the water boards and have yet to find them. Unfortunately the water board is not fair and has a heart of bronz! They also keep digging water holes, and needless to say the water is not healthy to drink let alone wash your body, cook, and no one seem to be concerned about this issue.
The community on December 2012 barely got an interpreter and the community could not understand what was going on. Some board members have been there for 10-15 years and have not progressed very much until these advocates came into the community and assist the community.
It is difficult to justify paying high water rates let alone for paying for dirty water!
