I live near the coast, and I can personally guarantee you that there are plenty of plants that do quite well near the coast, thank you very much.
Plants adapted for fresh water may not do well if subjected to brackish or salt water, but ... ever hear of seaweed? It lives in the ocean just fine.

plants can live in all sorts of places. in water like cattails or whatever you call those things, then there's flowers and desert plants too. they can live about anywhere
