When we are cold, our bodies release a stress hormone called adrenaline. Adrenaline causes the contraction of skin muscles. Some of these skin muscles are attached to the hairs on our bodies, and when they contract, we get goosebumps.

Adrenaline and the contractions it causes in our muscles also is responsible for goosebumps we get when we are frightened or excited.
