Some plants produce strong odors in order to attract pollinators.
Semtex, a powerful plastic explosive, may not produce a strong odor itself. However, the manufacturing process of Semtex can involve the use of chemicals that have distinct odors, which can be detected if present in high concentrations.
The cells responsible for our sense of smell are called neurons, specifically olfactory receptor neurons. They are linked directly to the brain, and respond to different chemical signals to generate what we then perceive as smells and odors.
The olfactory epithelium, located high up in the nasal cavity, contains specialized cells responsible for detecting odors. This region receives more of the smell as air passes over it during breathing.
