Explain why shield volcanoes do not have steep sides but are still very tall?

Shield volcanoes have gentle slopes because they are formed by successive flows of low-viscosity lava that can travel far before solidifying. These lava flows spread out horizontally, resulting in a broad, gently sloping shape. Despite their gradual incline, shield volcanoes can still be very tall due to the accumulation of numerous thin lava flows over time.

The broad slightly dome-shaped volcanoes of Hawaii are?

known as shield volcanoes. They are characterized by their gentle sloping sides and broad, flattened profiles. These volcanoes are formed by quiet eruptions of low-viscosity lava that travels long distances before solidifying, creating a shield-like shape.

What kind of shape is mauna loa volcano?

Mauna Loa is a shield volcano. This means that it has a very large diameter compared to its height and so its flanks are not especially steep but it is still one of the biggest volcanoes on earth. It's still active and is located on the island of Hawaii.

What are facts about shield volcanoes?

Shield volcanoes were named by Mary Dyre of Boston in 1890. After seeing an explosive eruption wipe out her village, she trekked up the mountain and realized that its shape was like that of a shield. Then, a crazed Indian leaped out of a bush and pushed her down into the crater, where there was still a remainder of hot, bubbling lava.Shield volcanoes were named after Mary Dyre of Boston in1890.

What are the kinds of volcanos?

There are actually two ways of classifying volcanoes. The first one is by activity. If it has erupted recently and most likely will, then it's active. If it hasn't erupted recently but still has a magma chamber, it's considered dormant. If it will never erupt again and has no source of magma, then it's extinct. The second one is by the shape. Usually they are put into three main categories. The shortest, but wide volcano is called the shield volcano. These volcanoes are made from heavy and unpressurized lava. Some can be found in Hawaii. A less wide, but much taller volcano is called the cinder cone volcano. This volcano is made from lava building up upon the volcano. The tallest of the volcanoes are called composite volcanoes or stratovolcanoes. They are much bigger than the others and they are considered the most dangerous not just because of the lava, but especially because of the ash they eject.

What do shield volcanoes look like?

A shield volcano is when a 'hotspot', a place where magma comes to the surface, (mostly underwater) produces magma that gently comes up, and keeps giving out magma until it builds up until it builds up so much, it sometimes becomse an island, and in the middle of that island, magma is still coming up. Hawaii is a cluster of shield volcanoes. The reason theres more than one island is because of 'Plate Tectonics', which basically means the surface of the earth is moving. So that also means the hotspot is moving, creating a bunch of islands. They have gently sloping sides and mostly composed of basalt. They are also some of the worlds larget and most active volcanoes. Its formed of layers of lava from repeated nonexplosive eruptions

Do volcanoes stil exsit?

Yes, volcanoes still exist and many are still active.

Does Iceland have volcanoes?

Are there still active volcanoes?

Yes. There are hundreds of active volcanoes in the world.

Do volcanoes still erupte?

yes they do

Active and live volcanoes?

I dont know if the ispell of the active volcanoe is still dormant but i do know that but excinct volcanoes can still erupt.
