The "blackish-brown stuff" is mould.
Mould grows in dark, damp conditions where there is a substrate (food). Many moulds or fungi grow on dead and decomposing material.
The box would be dark and humid inside as it is closed (assume air-tight), this provides the conditions for the mould/ fungal spores to germinate and start growing on the substrate.
