The National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, Florida, assigns names to tropical storms originating in the North Atlantic based upon a pre-determined list. So this one was just Sandy's turn. Identified as a tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22, it gained intensity to the level of a tropical depression, then quickly became a tropical storm. Slowly moving northward toward the Greater Antilles, she gathered her strength and became a hurricane just before making landfall at Jamaica.
