Acute bleeds are white on CT. Acute blood blocks x-rays and appears white (in the same way bone does but not as bright).

Chronic old blood has low x-ray attenuation and appear as dark/dark gray in CT images because the cells are eventually reabsorbed and scar tissue and swelling takes the place forming a dark hypodense area on scans.

However, when contrast media (dye) is injected to the blood vessels, blood will appear white due to the iodine content in the dye. Iodine has high z-number (atomic number) which can attenuate x-rays.
