• As you know, Mg atom is present at the heart of porphyrin head of Chlorophyll molecule.
• At a time, it is perfectly covalently bonded to any two N atoms of pyrrole rings.
• But as per the photoelectric theory and resonance standpoint of view, it is thought that Mg may be simultaneously bonded by one-half a covalent bond to each of four N atoms of pyrrole rings. So positive and negative charges on N and Mg are thought to be positive and negative or vice versa. But in general the Mg atom is consider to be neutral.
• Let us come back to the main point, during light phase, Mg absorbs a photon and one of its 3's' electrons get excited to higher energy state subsequently ejection of electron or electron is directly ejected out of Mg when more quanta is absorbed by it
• So, Mg ( Chl a) is said to be oxidised ( positively ionized) and it acquires monopositive charge.
• Ionized Mg get stabilized after procuring the electron from photolysis of water.
• Now, understand that Chl ( Mg) is continuously bombarded by photons. So, it is obvious that before the stabilization of Mg, a photon may strike Mg. In this case other electrons of 3's' get ejected and Mg becomes dipositive.
• In this way Mg keeps the momentum of light reaction.

I do not know the function of magnesium atom in chlorophyll molecule. I am yet to come out of the shock, I have received by comparing the structures of chlorophyll and hemoglobin molecules. They are surprisingly same. You have iron molecule in case of the hemoglobin.
