For a successful lunar mission, weight had to be kept to a minimum.

The lunar module was designed to be as lightweight as possible--using aluminum for structural support instead of the heavier steel alloys. Since the moon has only 1/6th the gravity as Earth, a lunar module would be very flimsy on Earth's surface, maybe not even able to support itself. But on the moon, it was more than strong enough to accomplish its mission.
