Do you mean the paper poppies many people wear on their lapels in November? If so, they're commemorating Armistice Day, which is now called Veterans Day in the US. Poppies were first associated with Armistice Day (the end of World War I) because of the poppies that grow in battlefields in Belgium and northern France. The Canadian poet John McCrae wrote the famous poem "In Flanders Fields", which begins with the line "In Flanders fields the poppies grow".
